Individuals described as being 'espers', and extraordinarily gifted individuals that can read the tide of events, and possibly even prophecize the events of the future. Newtypes are birthed from humanity's exposure in space, and were first theorized to exist by Zeon Zum Deikun - the original leader of Side 3's Autonomous Munzo Republic (later known as the Duchy of Zeon). The Earth Federation naturally view Newtypes with suspicion, because these gifted persons originated from space (spacenoids). A lot of the time, the corrupt and fearful officials within the Earth Federation attempted to suppress the notion that space-borne individuals were superior to those born on Mother Earth. Newtypes have always been historically linked to the greatest conflicts and triumphs of the Unversal Century. There are natural Newtypes and also Cyber-Newtypes, the latter being artificially cloned/enhanced, yet still able to tap into the Typeforce (described below).
What is the "Typeforce"?
I will be borrowing some nomenclature for this section, in DC Comics - The Flash can enter a separate and powerful dimension known as the Speedforce (visually represented as a vortex tunnel of accelerated air/particles) that allows him to transcend time and space. It's also where he draws his powers of superspeed from, alongside his healing factor. Newtypes in Gundam are also able access a similar elevated dimension (I'm going to call it the "Typeforce), it is usually visually depicted by a vacuum of space that is illuminated by all of the colours of visible light. When a Newtype enters the Typeforce, he or she is suspended in space and can access a variety of abilities that far transcend that of their naturally impressive latent abilities. Marida Cruz (Puru Twelve) describes the Typeforce as a place where the universe is described as harmonized into colour and wavelengths.
What are Newtypes capable of?
- The ability to detect danger.
- The ability to read the tide of battle.
- The ability to instantly sense another Newtype.
Actively (or within the Typeforce):
- Project emotions, thoughts and imagery to another Newtype.
- Manifest the power of thought and emotions as real/physical power.
- Harness the energy of the Typeforce as a concentrated surge of energy.
- The ability to travel through time (see: Full Frontal's time jump).
- The ability to counteract the force of Earth's gravity (see: Axis Shock).
In the same way that only a select few Jedi are able to become one with the force after death, I believe this is the same thing that occurs with Newtypes. Newtypes can access the Typeforce once they gain an affinity with it, the most obvious examples of this would be Amuro Ray, Camille Bidan and more recently - Banagher Links. Amuro Ray famously became a part of the Typeforce the moment he disappeared alongside Char Aznable during the events of Axis Shock. Camille Bidan could still tap into the Typeforce to communicate telepathically with his successor, Judau Ashta (ZZ) - even in a vegetative state. Banagher Links could communicate with Marida Cruz at a higher plane of understanding and comprehension - and also used his tremendous Newtype powers to take out all of the General Revil's escort suits with one wave of a hand. However, it is my belief that only Newtypes with a sufficient Newtype power concentration can ascend into it upon death (natural or otherwise).
The crux of this is, if you are a strong enough Newtype, you could form part of the Typeforce when you die. The only thing that I am unsure of is how strong of a Newtype you'd have to be to ascend. You could argue that if Char Aznable, one of the weakest Newtypes in the U.C could reunite with Lalah Sune and Amuro Ray in the Typeforce during the finale of Unicorn EP07 - then anyone with a hint of Newtype strength will go to 'understanding heaven' upon death. That seems like a reasonable conclusion, until you realize that Amuro Ray's Newtype powers were magnified by the psycho-frame resonance between the Sazabi's life-pod and the Nu-Gundam's body. This caused a chain reaction which activated both Char's and Amuro's latent Newtype powers to overload the psycho-frame material. Char's last sensation was to note the warmth and absence of fear from the people around him, those that were willing to put aside the raging war to try and push Axis away from crashing into the Earth.
Those that are familiar with Stargate SG-1 will know that Daniel Jackson ascended through the help of the Ancient named Olma. Perhaps Char only managed to enter the Typeforce because he was 'helped' by Amuro, or that it was a fluke because their mobile suits' psychoframes helped to amplify the Newtype resonance. I propose that you'd need to have a certain concentration of Newtype potential to tap into, and access this hugely powerful dimension, whether the user is alive or dead. Therefore, it doesn't matter if you were a "villain" or "hero" in this sense, you just needed a sufficiently strong affinity to the Typeforce, something that would be determined by your own natural Newtype power you were born with, and how much you developed or enhanced that ability.
Therefore, going by this approach - one could say that Paptimus Scirocco and even Haman Karn would technically exist in the same dimension as Amuro Ray & Camille Bidan. At which point, it wouldn't exactly matter - because in the Typeforce, there is no distinction of good or evil, to exist in the Typeforce is to be at complete harmony with the cosmos and similar beings of equal ability. I came to this conclusion, because the violent deaths of Newtypes usually caused them to merge with the Typeforce, and in Gundam - these were typically mobile suit explosions or other traumatic/sudden and kinetic events. They were also moments in time which saw host to extremely intense emotions from the Newtype: Fear, Remorse, Acceptance, Love and Hate. Emotion, just like any force of the individual - would determine the projections and compatibility of the user with the Typeforce.
Humanity in the U.C never really got to understand and harness the true power of the Typeforce, the implications of which would have been tremendous for our technology and power output. Instead, in true U.C fashion - we only used Newtypes for entirely selfish, narrow-minded and destructive purposes. Could you imagine the potential for humanity to propel itself outside of our solar system if they managed to utilize but a small percentage of the Typeforce?
In the events of Gundam Reconguista in G, humanity still has remnant knowledge of Newtypes. The power of Newtypes has manifested itself in SU-CORDism. Yet despite over 500 years of technological development and post-U.C revelations, it would seem that we (humanity) still hasn't fully understood Newtypes and the Typeforce. This could be because Newtypes are still a rarity in terms of the percentage of people born as Newtypes versus normal births. Other factos which may have influence the seeming lack of Newtypes in the Reguild Century may be that the extremely long period of peace may have meant that Newtypes would have been more difficult to detect or identify (their abilities are very suited for combat, and become more obvious then).
Of course, it's also entirely possible that 500 years after the Universal Century, spacenoids may have evolved in a direction which is different from Newtypes of the previous era. If humanity had such a great potential to transcend itself when we escaped Earth's gravity, then perhaps Newtypes were just one of many possible versions of advanced humanity. With G-Reco being the last real major project for Yoshiyuki Tomino, we may never know the complete picture of the Newtype Phenomenon, alongside the existence of the Typeforce. It's up to us as viewers and fans to piece the lore together to hopefully gain a better insight into the Newtype mystery.
