After your humiliating arrest by people you'd be able to kill in three seconds flat, you are then publicly accused of regicide by the shiftiest and most corrupt official in the city state of Ul'Dah. Just the concept of things getting to this point alone is quite insulting, but when the people around you actually believe the villain (who may as well be one from a Saturday morning kid's show), you know that the lore team is trying to push the story with all the force in the world to wrap it up. Surprised, I figured that someone in Square Enix had to be okay with seeing what amounted to two years of storytelling being thrown out the window in this manner. We've saved the realm from primals, imperials and then more recently - a giant fuckoff dragon about shit all over Ishgard (not that I would mind). Apparently, all of your efforts amounted to nothing - and so, you are now branded a fugitive.
Still with me? right, so at this point you've been arrested by four generic mooks using fifty gil vendor swords, publicly humiliated and shunned by the very leaders that you risked your life for, then you are essentially exiled as a fugitive from the law now. Who's out to arrest you? the Crystal Braves, who turned out to be led by yet another evil potato. Worthy to remember, is that the Crystal Braves are populated by all manner of scum and you and a group of friends could pretty much kill all of them with enough work. After this awful cavalcade of storytelling, the game then proceeds to systematically kill off every Scion in the archetypical anime trope: smiling before a flash of white light engulfs them. A trope such as this one is usually involved in a heroic sacrifice after a sufficient build up in the plot. Here, it is laughably misused, because the hero has been thrust into a plot so shakily executed, that anyone with an eye for decent writing would have already shut off the analytical part of their brain.
Dust from this clusterfuck of immersion has settled now, as the story draws to a close. Alphinaud, a character whom I never had any connection with - decided that all of the horribly written scenarios that became canon was fate's way of teaching him a lesson. Nobody really cares about you, Alphinaud. At least Tataru's still alive, I suppose that's a plus. Rising stones is sealed off to the hero, even though it was you who put things into place to get that great office for Minfilia. The Crystal Braves threaten to arrest you outside of major cities, and holy shit I'd love to see them try. To add further salt to an open wound, your new "Base" is essentially the wine cellar of a rich Giraffe man-king, the sum total of the New Scions being you, Alphinaud and Tataru.
Golly gee, it's going to be an agonizingly long three month wait for the expansion.
